The command of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno Karabakh is conducting an investigation into the death of a civilian in the Martakert region who was shot dead by an Azeri soldier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a weekly briefing.

“On October 9, a civilian was fatally wounded by a shot fired by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces in the Martakert region. We express our condolences to all the relatives and friends of the victim,” Zakharova said. She added that in order to prevent incidents in their area of ​​responsibility, the Russian peacekeepers are in constant contact with the general staffs of Armenia and Azerbaijan.

She also said that this tragic incident confirms the need of strictly observing all the provisions of the trilateral statement.

“We call on both sides to exchange prisoners on the principle of ‘all for all’, to exchange maps of minefields,” Zakharova said.

On October 9, a Matakert resident was shot dead by an Azeri serviceman while working in his garden.
