24.12.2021 | 14:05The first session of the newly elected Vanadzor Council of Elders, scheduled to be held today, failed to convene. Acting Secretary of the Community Administration Davit Hakobyan read the ruling of the Administrative Court of Appeal. Based on the lawsuit filed by the Bright Armenia party, the court applied an interim measure, which prohibits the Vanadzor Council of Elders from convening a session during this period, with the agenda of electing a mayor. Besides, only 16 out of 33 members of the Council of Elders were present at the meeting, therefore, it was not valid.
One of the members of Mamikon Aslanyan faction said that by this decision, “the ruling party is simply trying to take away the vote of the people of Vanadzor, and that the Bright Armenia party, which has not won the trust of the people of Vanadzor, supports the ruling party.
Initially, the first session of the Council of Elders was supposed to take place on December 17, but two days before that, Aslanyan, the candidate of the Mamikon Aslanyan bloc, which won the local elections, was summoned to the Investigative Committee and then arrested. He was charged with several crimes related to abuse of office.
