14.10.2021 | 18:02The UN International Court of Justice should take interim measures against Azerbaijan during the consideration of the lawsuit filed by Armenia on the violation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, Armenia’s representative Yeghishe Kirakosyan said at the hearings on Thursday.
As stated in the earlier lawsuit filed by Armenia, the purpose of the interim measures is to protect and maintain the rights of Armenians from further encroachment and to prevent the escalation of the dispute before a substantive decision is made on the case. In this regard, Kirakosyan stressed that “there is an urgent need to take measures to protect these rights.”
“Through this lawsuit, Armenia seeks to prevent violence and aggravation of hatred against ethnic Armenians. Armenia has urgently sent this request for temporary measures to protect the rights of ethnic Armenians,” he said.
On September 16, Armenia filed a lawsuit against Azerbaijan in the UN International Court of Justice in accordance with the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. The lawsuit alleges that “Azerbaijan has discriminated against Armenia on the basis of racial discrimination for decades,” which has resulted in massacres, torture, and other violations. These violations were brought to the fore again during the September 2020 conflict, when Azerbaijan again committed serious violations of the convention.
“Even after the end of hostilities, Azerbaijan continues to kill torture and commit other crimes against Armenian prisoners of war, hostages and other prisoners of war,” the statement said.
