The European Court of Human Rights has delivered another ruling against Azerbaijan. The court stated that Azerbaijan tortured and deprived of liberty Artur Badalyan, an Armenian citizen, who had accidentally crossed to the territory of Azerbaijan. The European Court ordered Azerbaijan to pay him applicant EUR 30,000 in damages. According to the case, on May 9, 2009, Badalyan disappeared and was captured by Azerbaijani forces. His whereabouts were unknown to the family and the Armenian authorities until November 5, 2010, when he was registered as an Armenian prisoner of war in Azerbaijan by the International Committee of the Red Cross. He was released on March 17, 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange.

Badalyan said in his claim that he had been held captive in various military establishments for 22 months after being captured by Azerbaijani forces. He claimed that he was not given enough food and was often not allowed to go to the toilet. Moreover, they were subjected to severe torture and mental suffering.
