On the sidelines of the International Conference of Heads of European Prosecutors, held in St. Petersburg, Armenian Prosecutor General Artur Davtyan had a bilateral meeting with Christos Giakoumopoulos, Director General of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe, Prosecutor General’ s Office reported.

At the meeting, the humanitarian consequences of the Artsakh war were discussed in detail, especially in terms of violations of fundamental human rights and freedoms. Davtyan spoke about the facts of violating by Azerbaijan of the rights of Armenian servicemen, prisoners of war and civilians in Azerbaijani captivity. Davtyan said it was critical for the international community, particularly in the field of human rights, to properly react.

He also said that Azerbaijan’s destructive actions do not contribute to the stabilization of the situation, they directly contradict the requirements of the trilateral statement. As an example of destructiveness, he pointed to the illegal criminal prosecution of Armenian prisoners of war and the organization of trumped-up trials on baseless charges against Armenian prisoners of war. He also voiced the deliberate criminal encroachments on the Armenian historical and cultural heritage by the Azerbaijani armed forces motivated by national hatred.
