On February 28, on the day of remembrance for the victims of the massacres in the Azerbaijani SSR and the protection of the rights of the deported Armenian population, a conference-discussion initiated by the Chair of the NA Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Social Affairs Taguhi Tovmasyan was held, where the representatives of academic circles participated.

The Committee Chair reminded that 34 years ago, on these days, the peaceful Armenian population was subjected to mass violence and torture. The deputy emphasized that massacres, ethnic cleansing of the Armenian population in Sumgait, Baku and Kirovabad, which reminded the 1915 Armenian Genocide, were regularly carried out. According to her, for almost 30 years, Azerbaijan has sown so much hatred against Armenians that during the days of military aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan against Artsakh in 2020, we witnessed inhuman atrocities. Azerbaijan, in addition to the crimes against humanity, has killed the Armenian peaceful population, targeted the kindergartens, schools and hospitals. According to Taguhi Tovmasyan, crimes committed by Azerbaijan against humanity must be properly responded to and assessed by the international community. “I would like to emphasize once again that as long as the mechanisms of responsibility do not work, the genocidal policy of Azerbaijan, the violation of international provisions, the crimes against humanity will be continuous,” the Committee Chair noted.

The participants stressed the importance of such a discussion, underlined the need for carrying out research work, cooperating with the international community, having a state strategy, as well as forming a political agenda.
