The arrest of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who now is a Ukrainian citizen, has caused tension in Georgian-Ukrainian relations. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky had a telephone conversation with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.

“In a telephone conversation with Georgian Prime Minister Gharibashvili, I stressed that the rights of Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili must be fully guaranteed in accordance with international norms. I asked to let Saakashvili’s mother, relatives and Ukrainian doctors to visit him,” Zelensky wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the Georgian Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement regarding the conversation.

Gharibashvili called Mikheil Saakashvili’s actions provocative, destructive and threatening the stability of the country, emphasizing that the interference of Ukrainian citizens in Georgia’s internal affairs is unacceptable.
