Up to 48.8 degrees Celsius. As Mediterranean countries struggle with the effects of the abnormally hot summer, the Sicilian commune of Katenanuova has already surpassed the 40-year European record temperature. And this is not the end, warn meteorologists. The peak of heat is ahead, Euronews writes. “As an expert, I was impressed by the intensity of the latest weather events, with the records set for each new week. We climatologists are amazed at the speed with which climate change is taking place. What we see now allows us to understand what the climate crisis could be like at the end of the century.

“The report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change states that we have only nine years to rectify the situation and limit the impact of the crisis,” said Gianmaria Sannino, head of the ENEA Climate Modeling Laboratory. “Among the possible risks is the increase in the number of such heat waves. They can be more intense, lasting more than a week or 10 days, up to a month, maybe even longer, when it comes to the Mediterranean. The temperature of each heat wave can rise.

“Another aspect that has already had an impact on climate change is rising sea levels.” And this means that the probability of floods increases, as happened in Germany in July, killing dozens of people. All these natural disasters are man-made, Euronews emphasizes, noting that experts say it is time to change the irresponsible attitude towards the environment.
