13.07.2021 | 13:48Former Meghri mayor Mkhitar Zakaryan has been detained for two months.
Zakaryan, who was the No 17 on the electoral slate of the Armenia bloc was charged with abuse of authority and fraud.
His lawyer Yerem Sargsyan told Factor.am that though the arrest of his client had been appealed in court and recognized illegal, Zakaryan, nevertheless was arrested.
Earlier, Armenia’s ombudsman had said that the government bodies were obviously cooperating illegally against the former mayor. This is only one of the criminal cases related to the former mayor. One of them dealt with renting an ArmenTel mobile communication station; Zakaryan was accused of causing 3.5 million drams (about 7,000 US dollars) damage to the community budget.
Zakaryan submitted his resignation letter a few days ago. He said he would serve in parliament. A few days ago, the Central Electoral Commission upheld the motion of the Prosecutor’s Office to approve to prosecute Zakaryan.
