National Assembly fails to adopt opposition-proposed statement on Armenian-Azerbaijani border situation

The National Assembly failed today to adopt a statement on the situation in the Republic of Armenia and Artsakh proposed following an urgent discussion. It received 26 votes in favor, with no against votes or abstentions.

The draft statement said, in part, that Armenia condemns the 2020 aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan and Turkey with the involvement of terrorist groups, as well as taking hostages after the ceasefire was established, considering Azerbaijan’s actions as war crimes.

The head of the Civil Contract faction in parliament, Hayk Konjoryan, said that the draft statement was received by the political majority only late yesterday after the two opposition factions fully drafted it, and was not involved in any way in the drafting process.

“We would be very happy if we had the opportunity to work with our partners on the project. In any case, we tried to work with our partners to get a consensus version of the project, but failed. We fully support the provisions regarding the war unleashed by Azerbaijan, war crimes committed by Azerbaijan, anti-human actions. We do not see any problem with these provisions. Moreover, the parliamentary majority, with all its channels and the cabinet at all levels, is fighting for the international recognition of the mentioned problems and for the solution of the problems. From this point of view, we do not see a significant problem, but the statement also includes statements of internal political content, approaches that are part of the political narrative of the opposition, which cannot be included in such a statement. Unfortunately, we have not been able to reach a consensus with the opposition to remove those statements, therefore, the Civil Contract faction will not take part in this vote, ” he added.
