Irakli Kobakhidze, the leader of the ruling Georgian Dream party, believes that former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who was arrested in Tbilisi yesterday, is acting in Russia’s interests, Russian RIA Novosti agency reported.

The report says the politician made such a statement on Saturday, when local self-government elections are taking place in Georgia, the residents of 64 cities, regions must elect mayors and their deputies. Earlier, Kobakhidze had said that Saakashvili “came to Georgia to fulfil his threats to carry out a coup and to cause unrest in the country.”

“Saakashvili acted in the interests of Russia for nine years when he was in power. He transferred 20% of Georgia’s territories, strategic economic facilities, etc. to the Russian Federation. Then, being in opposition, he continued the Russian cause. And he came to Georgia to do the Russian thing. Therefore, when it comes to Russia’s affairs and interests, we must always remember Saakashvili,” Kobakhidze said at a briefing.
