25.08.2021 | 18:45Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid on Tuesday said that there was no need for the presence of Turkish troops at the Kabul airport and the Islamist group would secure the airport by themselves, Afghan 1TV channel reported.
The Taliban statement over Turkey’s plan to protect the Kabul airport arrives amid the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan following their takeover of the war-torn country last weekend.
Taliban Spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid has repeatedly rejected the Turkish plan to extend its military presence in Afghanistan.
“There is no need for presence of Turkish troops, we will secure the airport by ourselves,” 1TV cited Mujahid as saying in a tweet.
In a previous statement, Taliban officials had asked all foreign forces to leave the country by August 31.
“We are talking with the United States, Turkey and other partners with the aim of facilitating a civil operation of Kabul airport to enable the evacuation of people (beyond Aug 31),” German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said before a G7 summit on Tuesday to debate over evacuation efforts from the Kabul airport.
