The number of people infected with the Indian variant of coronavirus in Georgia continues to grow, and clinics are already finding it difficult to cope with the influx of patients. Despite the fact that new beds are added to the Republican Hospital in Tbilisi almost every day, there are no vacancies, writes the Georgian service of Sputnik. According to the deputy director of the clinic, Javara Ugrekhelidze, all 350 beds mobilized for infected patients are occupied. As for the cots, the clinic is ready to accept children as well. According to Lika Mumladze, the director of the Mtskheta Medical Center, more than half of the Covid patients in need of hospitalization are infected with the Indian variant.

“Along with the increase in the number of cases, the situation in the clinic is becoming more complicated, at this stage 112 patients are receiving inpatient treatment. Taking into account the course of the disease, the clinical picture, the spread and the anamnesis, we can assume that 70% of those hospitalized are infected with the Indian variant,” Mumladze said.

According to doctors, the Indian variant is characterized by the typical symptoms of the common flu, and people often confuse the coronavirus with the common cold. Doctors urge everyone to be careful, to be tested in case of symptoms, to isolate themselves. According to epidemiologists, it is because of the spread of the Indian variant in Georgia that there is a shortage of beds in clinics. It is reported that the Indian variant is more prevalent among children and young people. It is 50% more contagious than the British variant, which was once considered 50% more contagious than the Chinese. Let us add that as of 10:00 on July 20, 2616 new cases of coronavirus infection have been registered in Georgia. The total number of cases in the country is 390,945.
