Haiti Senate speaker to lead country temporarily

10.07.2021 | 14:03The Senate, the upper chamber of the Haitian parliament, declared Senate President Joseph Lambert to be the country’s interim president, according to a Senate resolution.
The resolution was supported by eight senators out of 10.
President Jovenel Moise was mortally wounded during an attack by an unidentified group on his residence late Tuesday. First Lady Martine Moise was also injured. The Council of Ministers introduced the 15-day martial law in the republic.
Haiti has requested for U.S. security assistance, also made a request for forces to the United Nations Security Council.
But a senior U.S. administration official said there were “no plans to provide U.S. military assistance at this time.”
