Omicron detected in Georgia

20.12.2021 | 19:43Two cases of Omicron variant infection have been registered in Georgia, the head of the National Center for Disease Control, Amiran Gamghrelidze, said
“Both cases are Georgian citizens who have had a history of traveling to the United States and the Middle East. Both are isolated, now the study of 26 people who had contacted them is underway. In one case we have 10 contacts, in the second case – 16. Eleven of them are foreigners, the rest are Georgian citizens. Their in-depth epidemiological research continues. Both infected people are in their apartments, in isolation, the process is easy,” Gamghrelidze said.
The new strain of coronavirus, known as omicron, was first registered in South Africa, then spread to other countries. According to the latest data of the World Health Organization, besides Georgia, Omicron is registered in 89 other countries of the world.
