03.12.2021 | 14:47The United States hosts the Democracy Summit to reaffirm its role as the leader of democratic nations, a claim that has been jeopardized by the US’s withdrawal from Afghanistan and the US internal turmoil, American analyst and writer David Satter said in an interview with Factor.am, commenting on the Democracy Summit initiated US President Joe Biden.
Armenia is among the countries invited to the summit is scheduled to be held online on December 9-10. For the first time, the 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden, is organizing a summit with such a title. According to the official information currently available, heads of governments, experts, representatives of the civil society and the private sector of 110 countries are invited to it. Only Georgia is among the guests from our neighbors. The list does not include Azerbaijan, Turkey or Iran. Neither Russia nor China have been invited.
In addition to former Soviet republics of Armenia and Georgia and the Baltic states, only Moldova and Ukraine have been invited; , no EEU or CSTO member state is among them.
“The forum is very visible. The United States can try to make changes among different participants as a result of changing positions. It is possible, including in the case of Armenia,” said Satter said.
Referring to the new tensions between the United States and Russia over the summit, he noted that the conflict between those countries is part of international life. “It will be worse if Russia’s aggression intensifies, especially in Ukraine,” he said.
Armenia has accepted the US invitation to participate in the summit. When asked how can Russia, Armenia’s ally, which criticizes the organization of the summit, react to it, Satter sad; “Russia may seek to punish Armenia for participating in the summit, but it depends on the Armenians to what extent they intend to give up their freedom of action to please Russia.”
