Human Rights representative speaks out against prosecution of Armenian POWs by Azerbaijan

29.07.2021 | 17:38Giorgi Gogia, Director of the Europe and Central Asia Division of the Human Rights Watch international human rights organization, has addressed the issue of today’s sentencing of Armenian captives by a Baku court. He tweeted that the criminal prosecution of Armenian captives by Azerbaijan on charges of illegal border crossing is a violation of the 3rd Geneva Convention.
“Captive soldiers should be given the status of prisoners of war; they should be returned after the end of hostilities,” Gogia wrote.
The Baku Court sentenced today13 prisoners of war from Armenia’s Shirak Province to six years in prison on fabricated charges of illegal crossing of the state border and illegal acquisition of weapons.
