Turkish president condemns dancing on Armenian church

13.07.2021 | 15:01Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has criticized the incident where a group of people climbed over the entrance gate of the Surp Takavor Armenian Church in İstanbul and danced on top of the gate on July 11. “I see it as a provocation targeting our unity and solidarity that [a group of people] showed disrespect by climbing over a church wall in İstanbul Kadıköy,” Erdoğan stated, as quoted by Bianet.org.
According to the source Erdogan’s remarks came during the addressed to the public following the Cabinet meeting on Monday.
To remind, on July 11 a group of people played music and partied on the pedestrian road in front of the Surp Takavor Armenian Church in Istanbul. Three people from the group climbed over the entrance gate of the church and started dancing there. As the images started circulating on social media, the incident sparked criticisms and reactions on Twitter. Taken into custody for dancing on the gate, three suspects have been released from detention, two on probation.
