Establishment of US military bases in CSTO countries requires approval from other member states: Lavrov

12.07.2021 | 17:45Under the CSTO agreement, the deployment of US military bases or other military facilities in the territory of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) member states requires approval in the organization, but no one has submitted such an application so far, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has told a news conference, TASS reported.
“According to the Charter, all issues related to the presence of foreign military personnel in the territory of any CSTO member are subject to coordination within this framework. Obviously, none of these countries has applied to the CSTO for the need for relevant consultations,” he said.
In addition, Lavrov said that this also contradicts pragmatic considerations.
“The Pentagon says it would like to be able to deploy its resources around Afghanistan in order to strike Afghan territory if necessary. I do not think it is in anyone’s interest to fall victim to such a policy, the intention of the United States to strike back at it,” Lavrov added.
