15.03.2021 | 16:25Angela Merkel’s party, the Christian Democratic Union, is losing in two key regions in Germany’s local elections, BBC Russia reports. The Christian Democratic Union has a lot to worry about ahead of federal elections scheduled for late September.
The CDU is gaining only a quarter of the votes in the southeastern states of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate.
Traditionally, their residents actively voted for the Merkel party, although in recent years these regions have been ruled by coalitions led by representatives of the Greens and Social Democrats, respectively. The current heads of these lands are likely to remain in their places.
In Baden-Württemberg, the candidate of the Merkel party is noticeably inferior to the representative of the Green Party, Winfried Kretschmann. In Rhineland-Palatinate – Malu Dreyer from the Social Democrats.
