In an interview with Spanish EFE, Azerbaijani President Aliyev spoke about the proposal of the EU to mediate in the delimitation and demarcation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. He said that Baku supports this initiative.

“These topics are discussed during numerous contacts with our officials and EU representatives. In addition, during the visit of the President of the European Council Charles Michel to Azerbaijan, we discussed in detail the situation and expressed the general intention to work actively. The EU has extensive experience in various fields, such as reconstruction and the creation of peaceful conditions. The EU intends to take part in the delimitation process and reach an agreement between the parties. We support this initiative,” Aliyev said.

Armenia itself has proposed the involvement of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairing countries and international observers in the border delimitation process. And the Azerbaijani side offers to implement it bilaterally.

“Azerbaijan’s position is very open. We are ready to work. The EU can help us with delimitation, opening of communications and post-war development,” he said.

He again complained about the 2.6 billion euro assistance provided by the EU to Armenia and demanded the same amount of assistance for Azerbaijan.

We heard and we know that EU have prepared or is in the process of preparing the economic recovery package for Armenia worth 2.6 billion euros. And of course, we expect that the same amount of money will be offered to Azerbaijan on the same terms and conditions. Whether it’s grants, whether it’s loans, it should be equal, because we are the country which suffered. We have 10.000 sq kms of totally destroyed territory, all the cities, hundreds of cities and villages. Therefore, we, of course, expressed our concern that this economic recovery package can be unbalanced and we are now in the process of communications with EU and expecting from them the proposal for us for economic support. So, EU can do a lot, and we are ready to use this opportunity and we trust EU as an honest broker.
