26.02.2021 | 18:33Secretary-General of the European Ombudsman Institute Joseph Siegele has issued a statement on the Armenian captives being held in Azerbaijan.
“I call on Azerbaijan to immediately release all Armenian captives and civilians held in Azerbaijan following the recent Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Everyone imprisoned as a result of an armed conflict must be returned immediately after the end of hostilities, without any preconditions.
It should be considered exclusively in the context of human rights and the humanitarian process, as an international requirement for automatic action. The delays in the return of Armenian captives and civilians, violate human dignity and seriously violate the basic requirements guaranteed by the Geneva Conventions. This grossly undermines the post-war humanitarian process and international mandates guaranteeing human rights.
“The release of the captives and their safe return require an immediate solution,” the statement said.
