The United States has called for clarifications on the place of Boeing 737 aircraft, which made a landing on the territory of Iran instead of the Republic of Armenia.

“The US government is aware of claims that an aircraft registered to an Armenian company was diverted to Iran. We urge all relevant parties to immediately clarify the whereabouts and status of this aircraft. US law prohibits the transfer or otherwise provision of aircraft or aviation parts of U.S. origin to Iran. Entities that engage in these actions could expose themselves to U.S. sanctions,” the US Embassy in Yerevan said in a written statement today in response to Tert.am’s earlier request for comments.

Director of the Armenian Center for American Studies Suren Sargsyan had earlier voiced his concerns over the issue, questioning the circumstances that led the aircrew to make an emergency landing in the Islamic Republic.

Also, a former advisor to the prime minister on aviation affairs, Hakob Tchagharyan, addressed the topic in a Facebook post, noting that the Armenia-bound plane, which took off from Talin, Estonia, was diverted to Tehran “due to technical reasons”.

Fly Armenia Airways provided its clarifications later, saying that the aircraft was originally scheduled to land in Ukraine’s Hostomel Airport but had to make an emergency landing “in circumstances yet to be clarified”.
