The substantive discussions on the issue of expanding the presence of Russian border guards in the problematic parts of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border continue, Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin told reporters on July 7.
“As you know, Russian border guards are stationed in different parts of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, which helps to keep the situation on the border calm, stable, and, most importantly, the local population to feel more comfortable and safe in this unusual situation. Yes, there are discussions about how to expand that presence. I think everything will be decided to take into account Armenia’s security, stability on the border, fulfillment of agreements reached at the tripartite level,” the Russian ambassador said.
In response to the question whether there are concrete agreements on the proposal of the Armenian prime minister to deploy international observers on the Sotk-Khoznavar section to reduce the border tensions, Kopirkin said. “Subjective consultations are being held on the mentioned issues, these issues are being discussed, including in a practical sense. When relevant decisions are made, we will informed you.”
